About Owlkids Books

What is Owlkids Books?

Owlkids Books is an award-winning independent book publisher based in Toronto, Canada. We specialize in high-quality books for children ages 0 to 13, in genres including board books, picture books, fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. Our titles have been named best books of the year by respected resources including Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Booklist, Quill & Quire, the Globe and Mail, CBC Books, the New York Public Library, and the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, and have been nominated for a wide range of awards. We are proud to publish books that are loved by kids, parents, teachers, and librarians alike.

Owlkids Books is the sister company to Chirp, Chickadee and OWL magazines. The magazine publishing division began more than 45 years ago with OWL, and continues engaging young readers to this day. Owlkids Books and its predecessor, Maple Tree Press, originally focused only on science and nature books. Since those early days, we have expanded and diversified our critically acclaimed publishing program to include books across a range of categories and topics, from picture books to junior graphic novels to chapter books to non-fiction. We share office space with our magazine colleagues and collaborate closely. Find more information about our magazines here.

We are based in Toronto, Canada. Owlkids gratefully acknowledges that our office in Toronto is located on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Wendat, the Anishnaabe, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also acknowledge that the land Toronto sits on is covered by Treaty 13, known as the “Toronto Purchase,” signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties, signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. As publishers of children’s books and magazines, we take seriously our responsibility to educate our audiences about the history and legacy of colonialism and its impact on Indigenous Peoples, and we are dedicated to working toward a just and equitable future.

We do occasionally have opportunities for interns as part of school co-op programs, and we provide internship postings to school program directors. If you are enrolled in a publishing program, please consult your school about any open opportunities with Owlkids Books.
