IBBY Canada CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence 2022 Program

IBBY Canada invites published Canadian children’s book illustrators to apply for the annual Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence program. The 2022 program in October will be primarily online, with some in-person sessions at the Toronto Public Library North York Central Branch. The deadline for applications is Wednesday June 15.

The Illustrator in Residence program, launched in 2013, offers a published Canadian children’s book illustrator a month-long residency at a public library. The selected illustrator receives $5,000. Illustrators who’ve applied in previous years are welcome to apply for the 2022 program.

ILLUSTRATOR ELIGIBILITY

• Minimum of five traditionally published children’s books, including one in the past three years
• Experience with online presentations (Zoom, Google Meets, CrowdCast, etc.)
• Experience in presentations for children, high school students, and adults
• Available for 12-15 hours per week in October for morning, afternoon and evening programming (no weekends)
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Has vulnerable sector screening police clearance
• Although an IBBY Canada membership isn’t required for applications to the Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence program, we welcome new members. Please join us.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

• The illustrator develops and presents all the program elements. IBBY Canada’s program coordinator looks after outreach to schools, and schedules all the program elements.
• The program elements include:

• Art workshops for Grade 2 to 6 students (some in-person classes at the library plus some online workshops)
• Presentations for art students at high schools and colleges (online only)
• Illustration career sessions for adults (online only)
• One-to-one portfolio reviews with adult artists and art students (online only)
• Illustrator’s original artwork in library art gallery
• The illustrator creates/provides an image for marketing the 2022 program on websites, email, social media and other digital platforms.
• The program may cover some technical expenses such as additional teleconferencing and/or internet costs, webcam, lighting, etc.
• The online illustration career sessions for adults may include attendees from libraries and schools outside Ontario.
• The illustrator receives $5,000, with 50% at the start of the program and 50% at the end.

APPLICATIONS

• Applications are a single document (Word or PDF) that includes:
  • CV or resume with list of published books (include publisher and year)
  • Experience in online presentations and art activities; if available, include link to recording of online presentation, or attach MP4 file
  • Program ideas for online sessions for students and adults
  • Two (or more) reference letters about previous/recent online presentations
• If available, provide a link to a recording (or attach an MP4) of a previous online presentation
• Send applications by June 15, 2022 to illustrator@ibby-canada.org
• A jury will evaluate the applications and interview the top candidates.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The annual Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence program, launched in 2013, offers a published Canadian children’s book illustrator a month-long residency at a public library. The programming includes hands-on art activities for Grade 2 to 6 students, presentations to high school and college art students, evening sessions for adults, and individual portfolio reviews for artists and art students.

The previous Illustrators in Residence have been Martha Newbigging, Patricia Storms, John Martz, Dianna Bonder, Ashley Barron, Nahid Kazemi, Diego Herrera (Yayo), and Soyeon Kim. The program honours Joanne Fitzgerald (1956–2011), whose books include Plain Noodles, Emily’s House and Doctor Kiss Says Yes, and is a joint project of IBBY Canada, Toronto Public Library, and the Canadian Urban Libraries Council, sponsored by Joanne Fitzgerald’s family (Robert Young and Laura Young).
